Comodoro Rivadavia is the most important city of the San Jorge Basin. The city is often referred simply as Comodoro. It has a population of 137,061 as of the 2001 census [INDEC]. It is speculated that the population could be as much as 200,000 inhabitants, due to the growth the city has experienced in the recent years due to the oil industry and construction.[citation needed]
