- Description: My wife and I were eating lunch overlooking a ledge atop Gunsight Pass in Glacier National Park when I noticed a mountain goat behind us, about 30 yards up the trail at the summit of the pass. I grabbed my camera and stood to snap a shot of the goat and just as I saw the goat in the viewfinder, it suddenly reared up and wheeled about, then charged straight down the trail towards us. With a cliff at our backs, my wife stepped several feet to the side to get out of the goat's way, but my only conscious action was to wait in a half-crouched stance as it came towards me. The goat kept running at full speed until it was only a few feet away, then it made an abrupt left turn, ran around us and below us on a small ledge, then climbed to a rock outcrop above us where it could keep an eye on us for the rest of our meal. Only after the whole experience did I check my camera to see if I'd managed to get a photo of the goat. I had just a single frame of the goat, which I had no recollection of taking, but that I had apparently snapped off just as the animal began its charge.
