A Miner's View

  • Description: This picture was taken last week , the day before Yosemite closed. I was hiking with friends on the higher peaks of Yosemite and passed an old miner's camp high above Tioga Pass. I had passed this camp several times and recognized the potential of a picture. On other occasions the light was bad or I had no time. This time the weather was right and the clouds were with me. I told the two friends I was hiking with to go ahead and that I would catch up later. A hard thing to do at over 11,000 feet and climbing. I waited for almost an hour before the clouds began to break and light hit on the lakes and the mountain in the mid-ground. I realized after a few shots I would need more light in the foreground. I didn't have my regular off camera flash due to weight considerations. I didn't have a reflector to work with. It dawned on me that I had an appendage on my camera I never use, a built in flash. It's that little thing that pops up on your camera if you hit the wrong button. I was close enough to the frame and other foreground elements, so why not? The next shots gave me even exposures. The park closed on us the next day.
