Humpback Whale

  • Title: Humpback Whale
  • State/Province/Region: Alaska
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Town: Juneau
  • Brief Directions: Take Alaska Airlines north. Many tour operators in the Juneau area offer sightseeing excursions.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: Juneau is a beautiful area with abundant sea life that brings the Humpback whales in the summer time. It's hard not to see one, but the key is to be on a boat. The remoteness of the area makes it difficult to reach an area that has good viewing on land. A long lens and stable conditions are vital. Juneau is known for its rain, so be prepared to spend some time waiting for clear skies!
  • Gear: Rain gear, rain gear, and more rain gear! A long lens and a boat helps, too.

I loved your image in the magazine's B&W Issue but this photo is perfect. The lighting and color are gorgeous.

Thanks Laura!! I walked into this little slot canyon till it was completely dark and thought I'd sort of found nothing much…then turned around and saw THIS. I was gem for sure.
