Photographing Horseshoe Bend

  • Title: Photographing Horseshoe Bend
  • State/Province/Region: Arizona
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Northern Arizona
  • Nearest Town: Page
  • Brief Directions: There was a time finding this place was very difficult since people were just parking on the dirt on the side of the road. Now there is a turn lane when heading south with a large highway sign indicating the parking lot. Drive south from Page on Hwy 89a over the mountain pass and keep heading south until you think you’re in the middle of nowhere. Look for the sign and turn lane on the right.
  • Notes: Bring the widest angle lens possible since you will need it. Winter sun will cast a large shadow while the summer sun will be directly overhead.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: When you approach Horseshoe Bend for the first time you will be awed by two things. This is a huge bend in the Colorado River and you’re looking down a long ways. There is no fence or railing to keep you from plunging to your death. The green algae filled Colorado River has cut a large huge horseshoe shape gouge through the rocks here. Since Lake Powell dam is upstream the water flow is regulated here. You will occasionally see a motor boat go by leaving a white wake and it will appear as a small speck on the river. That is when you realize how huge this scene is. Most first timers are cautious and will not walk to the canyon edge but lay down hanging over the cliffs edge.It is a short hike over a hill on a sandy trail to the canyon.

I like the realism of your image. So many now are not realistic. The composition is great and just the right amount of post processing. Beautiful.

Beautiful rich colors Carla! Always love seascape images! Very nice blend of the sand/rocks/water!
