Wukoki Pueblo, Wupatki National Monument

  • Title: Wukoki Pueblo, Wupatki National Monument
  • State/Province/Region: Arizona
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Town: Flagstaff
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: Of all the ruins in Wupatki National Monument, Wukoki is my favorite. It sits upon an island of red Moenkopi sandstone, surrounded by a sea of black cinder ash deposited from the nearby Sunset Crater. It is believed that the walls were once coated with plaster, and possibly painted with designs, but over the centuries the desert winds have stripped the pueblo to it's bare rock. Scientists speculate that Wukoki was occupied by one or two families that lived there for a number of generations.

How do you know that it doesn't just like a clean beach uncluttered with human waste?
