Winter Solitude

  • Title: Winter Solitude
  • State/Province/Region: California
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Martis Valley
  • Nearest Town: Lake Tahoe
  • Brief Directions: I created 4 different panoramas of the shot I wanted each from a different time of the day or different cropping ratio. The afternoon photos had a human element to them because someone had left snowtracks in the field, however the sky was flat without the presence of clouds. When everything was done, I spend one day photographing this scene (coming back to it at various times) and nearly 4 days reviewing and editing the final image.
  • Notes: To date, this has been one of my most technical images to photograph. I shot the scene four times over various times of the day, each time shooting the scene at least twice to make sure I had photographs to work with... I never know what I have until I'm home reviewing.
  • Best Season: Winter
  • Description: This image was created from 8 different photos (the final image is a 100mp photo) sweeping nearly 40 degrees. It was shot in the Martis Valley just north-east of Mount Watson (outside of North Lake Tahoe). The solitude of the run down shack first struck me in composing this scene, along with the perfectly untouched field of fresh snow. Additionally, found a personal bonus with how the pine trees formed rows in the mountains and the movement in the clouds.
  • Gear: Nikon d800, 50mm F/1.4, Really Right Stuff BH-55 ball head, Gitzo G1228LVL Tripod
