Lenticular Sunset Over Mono Lake

  • Title: Lenticular Sunset Over Mono Lake
  • State/Province/Region: California
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Hy 395
  • Nearest Town: Lee Vining
  • Brief Directions: Located on highway 395, 13 miles east of Yosemite National Park.
  • Notes: Mono lake is at the transition between the Sierra Nevada Mts. and the great basin desert. One of the many things that makes Mono Lake unique are the tufa formations. Tufa is formed when underwater springs rich in calcium comes in contact with carbonates the water. This creates a chemical reaction resulting in calcium carbonate-limestone. What makes this place fun to photograph is when "space ship" (lenticular) clouds form over these alien tufa shapes!
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Down-filled jacket, warm gloves, neutral density filters
