Convict Lake / Eastern Sierra
Photo By Bob Simari / Baldwin, New York

  • Title: Convict Lake / Eastern Sierra
  • State/Province/Region: California
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: US 395
  • Nearest Town: Bishop/Mammoth Lakes
  • Brief Directions: Travel north from Bishop along US 395 for approximately 35 miles to the clearly marked Convict Lake cutoff; the lake is less than two miles from this junction. Park behind the picnic area and hike along the dirt trail which rims the lake until you find your ideal composition depending upon our time of arrival.
  • Notes: Convict Lake is well known to Eastern Sierra fishermen. In September the aspen trees turn a brilliant yellow and the crystal clear waters of this glacial lake sparkle while fishermen line its shores. Mid morning is my favorite time to shoot here because the lake and surrounding mountains have emerged from the shadows created by very early (normally preferred) light. If the clouds cooperate and a fisherman happens into the middle of the lake, you have the makings of a calendar worthy shot.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Gear: Wide angle lens, polarizing filter
