Mono Lake

  • Title: Mono Lake
  • State/Province/Region: California
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: US 395
  • Nearest Town: Lee Vining
  • Brief Directions: From Lee Vining take US 395 south about eight miles to Highway 120 east; this road soon takes you to the south shore of Mono Lake where, from the parking area, you can pick up the trail to the south tufa area.
  • Notes: The highly unusual tufa towers found at Mono Lake's south shore are very photogenic at sunrise as well as sunset. If you chose to shoot at sunset, the sky often becomes very dramatic after the sun drops behind the mountains to the west. This will produce beautiful reflections in the lake framed by the craggy tufa formations. Be sure to carry your tripod and a grad nd filter and you'll come away with some dramatic images if you are fotunate enough to catch one of those spectacular eastern Sierra sunsets with a few lenticular clouds.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: An alarm clock to get you up early. A grad nd filter
