Photo Details

  • Title: Moon Over Mt. Whitney Alabama Hills
  • State/Province/Region: California
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Death Valley
  • Nearest Town: Lone Pine
  • Description: This is one of many boulders smoothed by water over many year but is now more like a desert. These are the Alabama Hills in California. That is the setting moon over Mt. Whitney seen through the hole. This was taken at 7 am after waiting for two hours for the3/4 moon to set and the sun to rise. The rising sun is what is lighting up the boulder.
  • Brief Directions: Mt. Whitney seen through a boulder in the Alabama Hills of California.
  • Notes: This cool boulder field lies at the base of the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range next to the town of Lone Pine, on the way up to Whitney Portal. The infamous area features a drive named "Movie Rd". A historical spots for filming old westerns & cowboy movies. Plenty of television commercials & videos have been filmed here as well. From the Mojave desert, take Hwy.395 North to the small town of Lone Pine. At the only traffic light in town; turn left up Mt.Whitney Portal Rd. & continue up to dirt road turns off on right side of the road.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Canon 30D, Manfrotto Tripod with ballhead and quick release
