Sand Dunes To Snow Drifts

  • Title: Sand Dunes To Snow Drifts
  • State/Province/Region: Colorado
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Great Dunes National Park
  • Nearest Town: Alamosa, Colorado
  • Brief Directions: Great Dunes NP is located approximately 35 miles north of Alamosa in south central Colorado.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: Great Dunes National Park is not nearly as widely known as Yellowstone, Yosemite, Death Valley and others making it a great place to get photos of nature instead of shoulder to shoulder tourists. The dunes are nestled along the wester slopes of the Sangre de Cristo range in the San Luis Valley in south central Colorado. Prevailing winds from the southwest drop the dust and sand they are carrying as they rise to pass over the mountains. Very nice set of "Arches" Stephen. Wasn't sure, but thought someone said one of the famous landmarks fell? Really enjoyed the "Double Windows" when there!

That moose is a "spike" i.e. a very young juvenile, probably on his first year away from mom. His antler's will fill out further in the next few years.
