Aucilla River

  • Title: Aucilla River
  • State/Province/Region: Florida
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Taylor County, Jefferson County
  • Nearest Town: Perry
  • Best Season: Summer
  • Description: Florida's Aucilla River is an ancient tannin stained stream in N Cental Florida. The mostly undeveloped river is lined with forested lands both public and private. Giant cypress, Oak and Palm trees are among the many tree species found here. Black Bear, Whitetail Deer and alligator are frequently seen in and around the river. The white sandy soil when seen through the tannin stained water provides orange highlights contrasting with the shallow rocky shoals. Frequent sections of rapids alternate with slow meandering deeper sections. Fisherman are commonly seen floating and casting for "redbellies", a colorful panfish common in Florida rivers. Access maps can be found by visiting the Suwanee River Water Management District website. They control much of the adjoining lands. These maps provide directions to the Public Access points, landings and boat ramps. Canoes, kayaks and very small outboards are the only practical choices. Portages will be frequent.
