Photo Details

  • Title: Hanakapi'Ai Wonder Falls
  • State/Province/Region: Hawaii
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Na Pali Coast, West Kauai
  • Nearest Town: Haena
  • Description: The hike to the falls is tough, but well worth it. The start of the hike is at the end of Highway 560 at Ke'e Beach. After 2 miles you get to Hanakapi'ae Beach. A stream flows down the Hanakapi'ai Valley and outlets at Hanakapiae beach. Follow the unmaintained trail upstream for two more miles to reach this spectacular 100-foot high fall and pool. The trail is slippery, muddy, and steep with numerous stream crossings. It’s an 8 mile round-trip hike. Water flows from these falls from the wettest point on earth.
  • Brief Directions: Na Pali Coast, West Kauai. Take Highway 560 to the end at Ke'ee Beach. The Kalalau Trail begins here. Hike 2 miles down the trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach. Then hike 2 more miles inland along the trail by the stream to the waterfall.
  • Notes: Light weight equipment is a must. Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod, Acratech ballhead.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Gear: Canon 50D, EF 16-35mm f/2.8, Acratech ball head, Manfrotto tripod.
