Penumbral Eclipse & Hunter's Moon Of October 2013

  • Title: Penumbral Eclipse & Hunter's Moon Of October 2013
  • State/Province/Region: Massachusetts
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Public Garden & Back Bay
  • Nearest Town: Boston
  • Brief Directions: Look up to the eastern sky to follow the full moon as it rises into the night.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: Composite image of the October 18th 2013 full Hunter’s Moon during and after a penumbral eclipse. The first image on the left was taken at 7:58pm, 8 minutes after mid-eclipse, maximum shadow. The second image on the right was taken at 10:17pm, the “normal” Hunter’s Moon after the eclipse ended. “There are three kinds of lunar eclipses: total, partial and penumbral… In a penumbral lunar eclipse, only the more diffuse outer shadow of Earth falls on the moon’s face. This third kind of lunar eclipse is much more subtle, and much more difficult to observe, than either a total or partial eclipse of the moon. There is never a dark bite taken out of the moon, as in a partial eclipse. The eclipse never progresses to reach the dramatic minutes of totality. At best, at mid-eclipse, very observant people will notice a dark shading on the moon’s face. Others will look and notice nothing at all.” -Info care of www.EarthSky.org (http://earthsky.org/space/what-is-a-penumbral-eclipse-of-the-moon)

I love how the Milky Way appears to be a continuation of the river – no accident I’m sure. I’m guessing you had to take your sky shot with no moon in the sky, and the foreground with the moon low...
