Hoodoo And Hole-in-the-wall

  • Title: Hoodoo And Hole-in-the-wall
  • State/Province/Region: Montana
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Central Montana
  • Nearest Town: Virgelle
  • Brief Directions: The white cliffs of the Missouri Breaks are accessible only by river, either via your own canoe, kayak or raft, or through a local outfitter that provides one day or multi-day guided trips on the Wild & Scenic Missouri River. Hole-in-the-Wall can be photographed from the river and a campsite take-out just upriver - a great spot for a sunset view of the entire Wall. The view in this photo requires a 2-mile round-trip hike that involves some scrambling up a short but steep and slippery sandstone chute.
  • Notes: Standing atop this rock formation, you can gaze up river and over a landscape that probably hasn't changed since the time Lewis & Clark journeyed up, and then back down, the Missouri.
  • Best Season: Summer
  • Description: The Upper Missouri Breaks National Monument features a number of cliffs and outcroppings of eroded white sandstone along the Missouri River in central Montana. One of the largest and most dramatic rock formations has a natural arch that has been dubbed "Hole in the Wall". The same area also contains a number of hoodoos that are remarkably similar to those in the Bisti Badlands of New Mexico.
