• Description: This past summer, I was sitting in my backyard and saw this large woodpecker land on the side of a tree and hop down to a large oak stump that I had seen evidence of him being there before. I grabbed my camera and quickly moved to my neighbors yard, crawled on my belly through their back yard to a place where I had some cover, then quietly sneeded to with about 20 feet of him. He was so busy pounding his strong beak into the stump that he did not notice I was there. This is an incredibly shy woodpecker and I seen a few in the forest, but to have him in my back yard was amazing!
