The Gooseneck

  • Title: The Gooseneck
  • State/Province/Region: Utah
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Monument Valley, Navajo Tribal Park
  • Nearest Town: Mexican Hat, UT
  • Brief Directions: From Monument Valley NTP, take US 163 north across the San Juan River to Mexican Hat, and the turn off to SR 261, in about a mile or two the sign for Goosenecks SP appears on the left and turning left onto SR 313 will bring you into the park.
  • Notes: Although there are three gooseneck bends to be viewed from the park it is an impossibility to include them all without the use of a panoramic camera. Because of the lighting I chose to limit my view to one of the goosenecks which I considered to be the best viewed with the lighting possible.
  • GPS Longitude: -109.926882
  • GPS Latitude: 37.173927
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: Although Monument Valley NTP is a choice location for tourists to the American west, many visitors fail to notice Goosenecks State Park which lies only about 20-30 miles north of the Monument Valley. Consisting of 3 great loops in the San Juan River it presents one of the most spectacular vistas in southern Utah. This view is towards the southwest, across the San Juan, (a tributary of the Colorado), to the distant butes and mesas of the Navajo Reservation.
