Unmarked Way Trail

  • Title: Unmarked Way Trail
  • State/Province/Region: Washington
  • Country: United States
  • Description: Weather changes quickly during Fall on the Olympic Peninsula. Although the forecast looked great when I left my home in Portland for a quick backpack into Olympic National Park, by the next morning, my camp set up near Appleton Pass after a 7-miler up the Sol Duc valley, it was apparent things would change. This narrow ridge is the head wall of the Sol Duc valley. I'd scrambled across it and followed the unmarked way trail pictured here through brilliant fall foliage to an overlook that provided a view south to Mount Olympus. All the while, clouds roiled overhead, but as I retraced my steps back to camp, a break in the weather lit the hillside and I was able to take a few frames before this narrow window closed. I made it back to camp just in time for the deluge to hit. So much fun breaking camp in poouring rain!
