- Brief Directions: Take I-5 north about an hour from the Oregon/Washington border, then go east on Hwy 504 for another 45 min. Allow a full day to explore the lakes, streams, and constant mountain vistas within the monument.
- Notes: On March 8th, 2005, Mt.St.Helens sent a plume of steam and gritty ash 30,000 ft into the atmosphere. This turned out to be the largest eruption since the blast of 1980 that took 1,500 ft off the mountain. The unexpected event lasted about 30 minutes, about an hour before sunset. Mt.St.Helens is an unpredictable and exciting place to photograph--you never quite know what kind of suprises it will throw at you. On this particular evening I was set up to photograph the sunset and was greeted with this extraordinary event. Spring, summer and fall are the best times to visit the area.
- Best Season: Spring
