Ansel Adams is perhaps the most widely-recognized landscape photographer of all time. His black-and-white photographs of North America, and particularly of the American West, are iconic works that continue to influence photographers today.
During his time as “Photographic Muralist” for the U.S. Department of the Interior in the early 1940s, Adams produced over 200 photographs of the American landscape that are now available in the public domain for everyone to enjoy.
In our retrospective “Ansel’s Public Works,” we present a selection of Adams’ beautiful photographs that resulted from this project as Outdoor Photographer contributor William Sawalich tells the story of how this priceless archive was rediscovered and digitized.
