Using iPhone app The Photographers Ephemeris and the add-on SkyFire sunset forecast subscription, I was able to predict where the sunset light would be productive. I drove about 30 minutes and hiked for a while to set up for this scene to unfold.

Description

The more northward position of the setting sun provides some unique lighting for summer sunset shots. Afternoon thunderstorms building in the Sierra Nevada often break up to yield fantastic evening light. "Then it seemed to me that the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light." — John Muir, The Yosemite (1912)
