I felt this isolated patch of rare vegetation in the dunes, juxtaposed with a rising thunderhead, pretty well told the story of desert survival. During the monsoon season, White Sands receives most of its annual allotment of limited moisture. This image was taken in August, and the swirling top of the distant thunderhead really grabbed my attention. A polarizing filter allowed for a good capture of detail in the cloud filaments.
