Huaraz is 9 hours north of Lima, on the Pan American Highway. The trailhead for our trek was another 6 hours on a gravel road to the village of Hualcayan.
On the trek I damaged my Olympus OMD EM5 Mark II and an Olympus 14-150 lens. Following the rule of always carrying a back-up, I had my Olympus OMD, EM5 and a 14-42 EZ lens which I used for this shot. I also used Slik Sprint Mini II which is surprisingly study for such a light weight tripod. Finally, I used ISO bracketing for this shot so that I would have a shot at a fast enough shutter speed to avoid a planet tail.
Alpamayo (elev. 19,511) has a 4-sided pyramid summit. A survey of climbers concluded that it is the most beautiful mountain the world. My wife and I were camped at 13,828 with a clear view of the summit. I got up before 6 a.m. and saw the two planets in a clear blue sky just as the early light hit the east face of the summit.
