Devastation Creates New Spirit

Visit Johnson Ridge Observatory, hike the Harry's Ridge trial to the end of the trail, possibly four miles out.

The stump is a remnant left from the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The incredible power of such an event is obvious with all stumps in the area showing signs of being sheared off, not cut down. There are also many logs remaining in Spirit Lake. Mt. Adams is in the distant background with Mt. St. Helens to the right out of the frame. The view is great along the entire trail, but hiking to the end of Harry's Ridge is worth the effort to get a clear view of the lake and the landscape. In the fall prior to the snow, elk are often visible in various locations along the trail. I have found them most often at the end however, down close to the lake.
