Brief Directions

US-89 south from Kanab, Utah. Head south on House Rock Road 18 miles. Get local directions from this point.

Coyote Buttes is an outcropping of beehive rock formations about 40 miles east of Kanab, Utah. Go south off US-89 on a dirt road called House Rock Road. Go past Wire Pass and State Line Park before you reach the left turn about 18 miles in. Go east on a sandy road. This road requires four wheel drive at this point. It’s generally a good place to reduce tire pressure due to the deep sand. Asking locals about current conditions is important.
I took this shot in the winter. The Vermillion plateau is a cold and desolate area and exposed to the elements of rain and wind. Dress for the changing conditions.
The photo shoot at this location is fun. Coming and going from this location is ruff on vehiclesI camped in the area for a few days. It’s also a long drive from accommodations if you intend to be there at sunset and sunrise.
South Coyote Buttes is a collection of colorful twisted sandstone and beehive buttes. Layered earth tones of red, orange and yellow fill the scene. The warm tones stand out against the cooler color of the blue sky.
