Cathedral Rock is located within the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds N.M. this Unit is the Headquarters for all three Units, the Clarno, Painted Hills, and the Sheep Rock. At this Unit you have the beautiful Thomas condon Paleontology Museum that showcases the remains of both plant and animal life that once flourished in these areas. Also, this area was once the edge of the Western Sea, as one can witness as you walk across the seafloor along the trail below Goose rock. Ask the rangers at the Museum, they will take you on a tour free if they are not booked. the Blue Basin trails are spectacular, especially the lower trail as it was near here the first tortoiseshells were discovered that led to the beginning of this region as being the John Day fossil Beds National Monument.
