From the town of Bishop, CA on CA 395, take the signed roads west to Bishop Creek and then to South Lake. Hike 6 miles up 2,100 feet to crest 11,980 foot Bishop Pass, the descend to the JMT/PCT, reached at 12 miles. Hike south and climb the fabled Golden Staircase to arrive at the Lower Palisades, elevation 10,600 feet, where this photo was made. About 22 miles one way and worth every bit of effort.

This cloud kept building, larger and larger, over our back country camp at the iconic Palisades in the High Sierras. We had just arrived from crossing over Mather Pass but the cloud was so impressive that I searched for a foreground to make a photograph of it. The Palisades is an awe-inspiring jewel within Kings Canyon National Park along the overlapping John Muir Trail / Pacific Crest Trail. It's a place I have been fortunate to hike through several times.
