Description

Three humpbacks surging, mouths agape, through a school of anchovies trapped at the surface (a behavior called surface lunge-feeding). The Monterey Bay fits this assignment to a tee. It has been dubbed "The Serengeti of the Sea". I can fly to Africa or drive an hour and jump on a boat. NOAA's Office of Marine Sanctuaries says there are 34 different species of marine mammals that can inhabit the Bay (I've seen 21 of them). An amazing place, quite close to home.
