From Bend, head north on Highway 20 toward Sisters. Turn left in the town of Tumalo onto Tumalo Reservoir Road. Take the road about 4 miles until you cross a bridge. Get out and find a vantage point from which to catch the dawn light appearing on the Cascade Range to the west.
As I mention above, summer and spring often bring boring clear blue sky to Central Oregon. Winter and late fall often are best for dawn with color in the sky as a result of the remnants of overnight storm clouds catching the sunrise light.
Although winter as a date on the calendar is still several days away, the temperature has been plummeting in Central Oregon lately. There's been plenty of sunshine and no snow, and weather conditions have made for some really lovely dawns. Some of the best sunrises in Central Oregon happen during winter. You have to really want those dawn shots to brave the bitter, numbing cold at that early hour in the day. I took this when the temperature was hovering at about 18 degrees.
