Description

The Owens River works its way through the Long Valley Caldera, just east of the Sierra Nevada range. The Long Valley Caldera is noted for its geothermal activity and volcanism, so the river emits steam on cold mornings. This particular morning, the temperature was around 0 Fahrenheit, so there was enough steam to leave pogonip (also known as 'hoarfrost') on the nearby rabbit brush and sagebrush. The snow on the distant peaks (Mount Morrison and Laurel Mountain) adds to the frosty scene.
