As the sun neared the horizon, my wife and I encountered another backpacker on the Rae Lakes Loop. He stopped to chat, and relayed to us that the scenery ahead was "heaven on earth." We dropped our packs as soon as we found a spot to camp, and looked for a high ridge to climb onto to watch the sun set. A dramatic ceiling of clouds was forming above us, and I was excited to to how they would catch the light. Looking to the south, I realized that Mt. Rixford was catching this same light. I think this portrait of the mountain captures a beautiful glimpse of the iconic Sierra Range.
