Sometimes you seek a moment, and other times a moment seeks you. I recently traveled to Santa Cruz, California for a Frans Lanting Photography workshop. I was seeking new inspiration and skills, and trying to get out of my comfort zone.
One of the mornings was spent at the UCSC Arboretum. The arboretum has an extensive collection of Mediterranean plants from around the world. Many of them display incredible flowers. These flowers draw numerous Rufous Hummingbirds. I had vowed that day as we were focused on "playing with plants" not to go chasing the hummingbirds.
Near the end of our time at the arboretum I found myself with this little warrior sitting very comfortably on his perch. He flew a few sorties seeking nectar, and I would casually move a little closer. He was so comfortable with my presence I was able to put the 1.4 extender on my lens without disturbing him.
I kept my vow not to chase the hummingbirds, but I thought it was okay to capture one who came to me.
