On a recent trip to the Grand Tetons, these juvenile ground squirrels were on either side of the path. As my group came closer, they began chattering rapidly with each other. Then the squirrel on the right began to dart across the path toward the squirrel on the left, who had it's arms outstretched ready to catch the running squirrel. Then it ended with them in this embrace. Part hug, part kiss. It felt as though the squirrel on the left was saying, "it's ok. I've got you. I'll protect you from the big humans."
