On my last day of a visit to Arizona I drove out into the hills to catch the sunrise. The sunrise was cloudless and flat, but on the return drive I noticed a golden glow in the clouds of dust kicked up by horses in a pen near the road. The shadows of the horses legs in the backlit dust especially caught my eye. I had a flight to catch and almost drove on by, but luckily the feeling of the scene was too strong to pass up. I left the rental car in the middle of the dirt road, found a break in the scrub to line up a shot almost directly in to the dust-obscured sun, and waited for some restless horses to walk into the frame. As if on a director's cue, these two trotted into the frame and started sparring. I wish I could say I planned it. Less than five minutes passed from the moment I hit the brakes until I captured this image.
