Nearest Area

Description

Cascading some 200 feet into a swirling basin, the Palouse River has cut a deep gorge in the columnar basalt walls of the canyon before ultimately emptying into the Snake River. Perched nearly 400 feet above the canyon floor, the Fryxell Overlook offers panoramic views of the falls and Palouse River Canyon. This is a blend of two exposures. The foreground exposure was nearly 2 minutes to capture the churning water in the basin while the sky was 1/13 second to freeze the motion of the clouds and the pastel colors of sunset.
