This area is accessible by high clearance vehicle, navigating a maze of 2-track trails, about 25 miles from Highway 89.
The title of this image is “Navajo Dawn” however, this was taken during sunset. The title is short for dawn of the Navajo, and makes reference to this area being the spiritual birthplace of the Navajo people. This sacred and highly scenic and remote area has been under siege in recent years, because of the proposed Escalade Project. The proposed project included building a resort on the land, as well as a gondola type tram, running from the rim, down to the canyon floor. This particular spot overlooks the Confluence of the two Colorado Rivers. The proposed development of this area, has been voted against, by the people of the Navajo Nation, and for now will remain protected. My wish is to just be one of the few people who have been privileged to make this journey and witness this scene, and hope this land will be preserved for all of the future generations of its proud people.
