The Eastern Sierra features fall colors from the town of Big Pine through Topaz Lake, and the town of Mammoth Lakes is well situated to serve as a base to access many of the the best spots.
The main exposure for this image was 1/50th of a second at f/16, ISO 200. A circular polarizing filter was used to cut glare off of shiny aspen leaves, to preserve color. A 2- stop graduated neutral density filter (soft transition) helped balance the exposure between the trees and the mountain in shadow. To preserve shadow and highlight detail, three exposures bracketed one stop apart were adjusted in Adobe Lightroom and combined in Photomatix HDR software.
A break in the clouds enables a spotlight of sunlight to fall on a stand of aspen in California's Eastern Sierra region near the town of Mammoth Lakes.
