I'd never been to Convict Lake before but I'd heard it was a good place to shoot the sunrise. I arrived here in the dark on a freezing cold morning and wasn't sure where I should set up. I walked down the path and decided set up on the first bank I found, feeling somewhat hurried as the light started to brighten. Convict Lake is a pretty overwhelming scene, with Laurel Mountain dominating the landscape with its light color and amazing textures. I was hoping for clouds over the mountain that would light up, but as dawn arrived there were only a few thin clouds. I wasn't sure what would work, but what really caught my attention was the amazing stand of aspen blazing right at the base of the mountain, and their shape reflected in the perfectly still lake. As the few clouds lit up their color was reflected on the lake on on the mountain, so I took a close up shot to focus on the color contrast and shapes. About 10 minutes after I took this boats with fisherman launched into the lake, and the stillness was over.
