Brief Directions

I was close to the visitor center south of the town of Lone Pine when I captured this shot on a 70-200mm lens plus a 2X teleconverter, for 400mm total.

Notes

The color results turned out fine, but black and white helped Mt. Mallory stand out better from the surrounding clouds. Capturing three exposures and running them through Lightroom, then Photomatix HDR and On1 Silver Efex provided maximum control over detail, contrast and tonality.

Description

I was returning from a late September visit to Death Valley when I came across this early fall storm breaking up on the Sierra Nevada over the Alabama Hills.

The exercise of pursuing black and white results for the Outdoor Photographer Monochrome Magic Assignment led me to apply a black and white treatment to some of my latest work as well, This result from an early October shot is probably my favorite image of 2018 so far.
