Spirit Bears are actually American Black bears that have pale/white fur due to a recessive gene found only in the population inhabiting the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia. A presentation by Cristina Mittermeier of Sea Legacy convinced me that I needed to go see these amazing bears for myself. After flight to Vancouver and a 2 1/2 hour flight northwest and then a three hour boat ride, I was finally in the Great Bear Rainforest meeting my guide, First Nations Spirit Bear legend, Marven Robinson. I’ve seen a lot of amazing wildlife but nothing could have prepared me for this incredible experience. The lush green beauty of the rainforest could only have been up-staged by something as striking as the Spirit Bear that lives there. But rather than up-stage, the white bear enhanced the old growth forest, creating an unbelievable contrast that defied adjectives. In fact, all words failed at that point and we sat in awe just trying to comprehend what we were seeing.
