I spent the summer of 2018 searching many marshes, ponds and lakes for a glimpse of these elusive little birds. I had only seen one the the year before and it was up in a tree. I was exploring a favorite park of mine and I came across one at the edge of a marshy area. This one was clearly a juvenile and did not seem to fear me as much as an adult, so long as I kept still and quiet. It came within three feet of where I was sitting near the water's edge and my 70-300 Sigma lens enabled me to get a fairly tight shot of the bird's head without disturbing it too much.
