The popular Mesquite Flat sand dunes are adjacent to Stovepipe Wells Resort in Death Valley National Park.
This was captured at 400mm on a Canon EOS 70D, so 640mm full frame equivalent focal length. The area with the best shadow patterns was narrow, so I shot multiple overlapping images to stitch together in Adobe Lightroom and preserve resolution in the resulting long, narrow image.
Winter light can be fantastic on the sand dunes in Death Valley. A telephoto perspective compresses the ridges and shadows into abstracted patterns. To achieve this elevated perspective I had to go up on the adjacent Tucki Mountains and use a 70-200mm lens plus 2x teleconverter, on a crop sensor camera.
