When I think of conservation and Earth Day, my thoughts often go beyond just the beautiful places/landscapes that require preservation--I also think of species that are at risk from climate change. One of those species is the cute relative of the rabbit--a pika. As the earth warms, pikas need to move further up in elevation to survive. I encountered this particular pika high in the Sierra Nevada between 10,000 and 11,000 feet. It was scurrying about, gathering food and eating. It was a great sight to behold--but I worry about these animals and their future viability.
