In my photography, I am often motivated to capture beautiful, fleeting moments—a gorgeous sunrise, the moon setting near a mountain, etc. That is exactly what I captured in this photo taken earlier this year. I had envisioned this shot for awhile—and even attempted it a time or two before this one—but on this particular morning, all the elements came together perfectly. I wanted to get the moon setting behind the Sierra crest near Mount Whitney with the early morning sun illuminating the peaks. If I had attempted the shot a day earlier, the peaks would not yet have been lit by the sun when the moon was setting; had I tried a day later, the mountains would have been lit by mid-morning light—and the moon comparatively dimmer when setting. This was the perfect morning and moment to get the shot I was seeking. *Note: single image (not a composite).
