This was captured at the South Tufa site on Mono Lake. South Tufa State Natural Reserve is about 7 miles south of the town of Lee Vining on US-395, then five miles east on Highway 120.
I had a nice single exposure result, but for a little extra pop adjusted three exposures in Adobe Lightroom then processed them in Photomatix HDR.
In the fall the winds are less at Mono Lake, so sunsets tend to get calm. The alkaline waters of the lake are nearly 3X saltier then the ocean. Mono Lake is known for its tufa calcium carbonate rock formations that form underwater where springs bring calcium-rich water to the alkaline lake.
