I wasn't going to do this hike. I got to the car park, it was raining and I was pretty spent, but I knew the hike was quick and why would I turn down the opportunity to see something I haven't seen before. I got out of the car, fumbling to adjust my mindset and set up for the Upheaveal Dome hike. It's a steep incline, but its very short. I made my way to the top assuming that I would be working mostly with my 16-35mm, and I did for a good amount of the time. As I was scanning the area in my camera I saw a tree. There wasn't any other greenery and the whole area was mostly canyon walls so it really caught my eye. The canyon walls behind the tree had wonderful color so I knew compressing the background would really make this tree pop. I moved to my 200mm f2.8 and fired a few frames. It ended up being one of my favorite images from the whole trip. And to think...I almost didn't go.
