A small group of bison were trudging through a snow storm as I drove the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Cooke City in northern Yellowstone National Park. I stopped as soon as I saw the bison, and used a long lens and low f stop to isolate the lead bison in focus while blurring the background and falling snow. I had come to the park to capture wildlife in their context of surviving the harsh winter. The snow-covered lead bison was emblematic of surviving in that environment.
