Brief Directions

Nevada contains tens of thousands of closed mines. Most of them are on private property, and many are unsafe due to chemicals present such as cyanide and mercury. Please obey all posted signs and warnings.

Notes

Central Nevada has some of the darkest skies in the country for stargazing and night photography. It also has a rich mining history, so photography of historic buildings, artifacts and mines at night is a great way to combine an interesting foreground subject and the dramatic backdrop of bright stars. Photograph workshops are a great way to ensure that you have authorized access and don't get ticketed. Or shot!

Description

The Milky Way contains 200 billion stars, and there are billions of galaxies with billions of stars. Get far enough from light pollution, and the combined light from those distant suns is enough to illuminate earthly landscapes and mankind's artifacts.
