This photo is titled Cher Ami, in order to honor one of the most famous pigeons to ever live. Pigeons have made contributions of considerable importance to humanity, especially in times of war. In war, the homing ability of pigeons has been put to use by making them messengers. So-called war pigeons have carried many vital messages and some have been decorated for their services. Medals such as the Croci de guerre (Military decoration of France from WWI & WWII) to a female pigeon named Cher Ami (French for “dear friend”). Cher Ami is most famous for delivering a message from an encircled battalion, despite being seriously injured during the battle in October 1918.
